Hereford Roller Girls’ A Team The Horror Bulls has announced the new Captains for the upcoming 2015 season ahead of their participation in the Regional West Division of the British Roller Derby Championships.
Founder, Head Coach and Chair of HRG Zoe Butler takes over as Captain from fellow coach Becce Turner, who stepped down at the end of 2014 following the Bulls’ most successful season so far in their three years of playing roller derby. Louise Braithwaite is Vice Captain, succeeding Kim Wild.
“Having never fulfilled the role of Captain since forming HRG due to being off skates for the first half and then returning to rebuild my skills, I am honoured to represent the Horror Bulls as Captain in 2015,” said Zoe, who formed the team after leaving Birmingham’s Central City Rollergirls to bring roller derby to her hometown. “There isn’t a team I am prouder to be part of and to go out as Horror Bulls Captain is a real privilege.”
Butler’s first game as Captain is the Bulls’ first game of the season, at their new home at The Hereford Academy on Sunday 1st February. The Bulls take on Swansea City Roller Derby in their first Regional West Division game of the British Championships, and also host the game between Birmingham Blitz Dames and Nottingham Roller Girls.
The Bulls’ participation in the first ever British Championships will be a challenge following their fantastic success in the Heartland Series last season, where they finished their division as unbeaten champions. “The Championships sees us playing teams who are ranked higher, and in many cases have more bouting experience than the teams we played against last season,” says Butler. “We’ve been training hard and – as always – will be playing to win. We hope that with our rising profile, more Herefordians will come and discover roller derby and support us in our campaign.”
